Black garden ant
Lasius niger

In the early season these ants may be red bodied. In the summer some of the worker ants grow wings to mate with the large queen ants, which are distinctive by their black body and silvery wings (approx 15 mm long).

It’s advisable to watch foraging ants going back and forth to identify their nest sites. Ants will sometimes avoid a preparation applied at wall/floor junctions, it acts as a repellent to them.

In the summer some of the worker ants grow wings to mate with the large queen ants, which are distinctive by their black body and silvery wings (approx 15 mm long).

The Queens take flight to mate with the winged males, and after mating takes place the males die and the fertilized queens chew off their wings before returning to the nest.

Garden Ants feed on sweet spillages, although outside of human habitations they have a wide food range including much organic matter. Insecticidal bait stations and gels can be effective in controlling Garden Ant as long as all access to other food sources is limited.
